Last week I was in Melbourne for a few days. Here is a panorama of a cell in Old Melbourne Gaol - a well-preserved tourist attraction in the middle of the city. Many of the cells - like this one - are extraordinarily small - only 2m across maybe. Part of the oppressiveness of the place derives from the fact that the gallows are part of the living quarters, not in a separate building -- just at the end of the landing on one of the upper levels in fact. There is graffiti just visible in this panorama -- about an inmate presumably .. "hung for rape".

I went along yesterday to the launch of a new internet streaming radio facility - for training and broadcasting - streetradio.net - in a Salvation Army-run centre for detached youths in inner-city Surry Hills. The site is live for a few hours a day to start with. The guy in the suit is from Sony (the major sponsor) .... panorama
