This large piece of temporary vinyl Coca Cola signage at the top of William Street, Kings Cross abuts - just around the corner on the right - a similarly giant heritage-listed neon Coke sign. These intrepid abseilers yesterday are cleaning it by swinging backwards and forwards across it as they slowly descend. Annual rental for the signage space is a million dollars ($A)! The building behind is being converted from a hotel into apartments -- from the Millenium Hotel to Zenith Apartments. This type of conversion is typical of the Cross at the moment -- the neighbourhood is transitioning from a bohemian hangout and tourist destination to a somewhat seedy residential precinct. Panorama

Princess Anne on her latest tour of the Pacific had a hard time in Fiji where a disturbed man threw a heavy mortar (as in mortar and pestle) at her denting the car she had just gotten into -- the Foreign Affairs minister there apologised: "The government regrets the unfortunate incidents but they can happen anywhere around the world because there are crazy people all over the place." ... but things were quieter in Sydney this morning where she officiated at various events to do with a commemorative voyage of the circumnavigating Gipsy Moth 4 (the boat behind her) -- panorama. Here is another - closer - view of the boat - panorama
