The Cahill Expressway is a concrete monstrosity that lumbers the "gateway of the nation". Panorama from yesterday. Premier Joe Cahill said - at the opening of the first stage in 1958: "I think the whole of the work could be called a triumph of democratic collective planning, in so far as citizens and leading experts were consulted as to the ultimate design." Currently plans for its demolition are on hold but the walkway, the Cahill Walkway, has recently been upgraded. Another urban crime visible from this vantage point is the East Circular Quay development. For a while, until those nondescript apartment blocks were constructed, there were beautiful views from here through to the Botanic Gardens.
